Top 10 Best Goblins For Commander
They're the little bundles of destruction Magic players have loved since they were first introduced. But which are the all time greatest for your Commander deck?
Goblins
Goblins have long been one of the beloved tribes in all of Magic the Gathering. Mostly, we think that's down to their simple, consistent formula for life.
Fight. Wreck. Loot. Rinse and Repeat.
Sure they have small bodies, and even smaller brains. But no-one forms a horde quite like goblins, and they can be a serious handful in numbers. Once they reach critical mass, they will threaten to overwhelm your opponents even with those chunky Commander life totals.
So which are the must have goblins for a Commander deck? Let's explore their adorably violent world in our latest top 10.
Honorable Mention - Goblin Bombardment
First, an honorable mention. Our main list is only open to actual goblins, but there might not be a better card to sum up the flavour of the tribe in all of magic than Goblin Bombardment.
Goblins are many things, but they are most of all expendable. Goblin Bombardment takes that to its logical conclusion by unceremoniously lobbing them at your opponents! Every time you do this, you get a single point of damage to target wherever you choose. Who needs to actually attack with your goblins when you can just load up the catapult?
This card is a huge flavour win of course, but it can also be a real threat. It offers goblin decks a lot of reach and the ability to finish off weakened creatures and opponents in a way that is very hard to interact with. If your deck can generate a lot of goblin tokens - and we'll see really some good ways to do that in our list below - Goblin Bombardment can do some real work in your deck.
10. Goblin Matron
She may not do much on her own as a measly 1/1 for 3 mana, but Goblin Matron is a real linchpin in any goblin tribal deck. She effectively acts as a tutor effect in mono red, guaranteeing to get you exactly the right goblin for your exact situation. And like any good utility goblin, once she's done her job, she can always be chucked in the catapult!
Yes you have to reveal the goblin you find, which is a bit of a drawback compared to some tutor effects. But since when have goblins been about subtlety?
9. Guttersnipe
A rare goblin that actually isn't at its best in a tribal deck, Guttersnipe still fully deserves its place on this list.
This is a classic example of a card that gets a big boost in Commander with that all-important 'each opponent' clause. That wording triples Guttersnipe's damage output compared to heads-up formats, assuming all three of your opponents are still in the game. And hopefully they won't be for long with this thing firing on all cylinders.
Of course, you'll want a deck packed with cheap instants and sorceries rather than other goblins. If you can fuel Guttersnipe, the damage it deals will very quickly add up, and is a great way of ticking down the life totals of all of your opponents at once. Izzet decks in particular will love this little guy, and he works particularly well with Commanders that care about Instant and Sorcery spells. Melek, Izzet Paragon is a great choice given his spell-doubling effect that can multiply your snipe triggers.
8. Siege-Gang Commander
Siege-Gang Commander is one of the best token generators in the whole tribe, and he guarantees those tokens as soon as he hits the field. The sacrifice effect is on the expensive side compared to Goblin Bombardment, but makes up for it by offering double the damage and being able to hit Planeswalkers.
He's another much-needed source of reach to finish opponents off or remove utility creatures. We can't imagine the goblin deck that wouldn't want a copy.
7. Goblin Trashmaster
"Nice Sol Ring you have there. Be a shame if something happened to it..."
One of the more expensive goblins out there, Goblin Trashmaster is worth every bit of the mana investment. Commander is so dominated by mana rocks and other powerful artifacts that this card is almost guaranteed to be worth its weight in gold. The fact that it pumps every other goblin you control is just the gravy on top of such a powerful, repeatable effect.
If you can keep your Trashmaster supplied with a steady stream of goblin token fodder, it will set your opponents back terribly in their ramping efforts. threatening to blow up key pieces in many decks at almost no cost to you.
Even if your opponents elect to remove the Trashmaster, it can still sacrifice itself in response to take any artifact with it. Exactly the kind of suicidal commitment we expect from any true goblin.
6. Treasure Nabber
Treasure Nabber is truly in its element in Commander, where you'll be almost guaranteed plentiful opportunities to use its ability. If you can couple this card with any effect that lets you sacrifice artifacts for value, you'll effectively shut your opponents out of their mana ramp completely until they're able to remove the nabber. This is exactly what any aggressive red deck wants in Commander - slowing down opposition ramp maintains your advantage from your plentiful cheap cards.
This card pairs fantastically with Kuldotha Rebirth to turn your opponent's mana rocks into goblin token fodder for your plentiful goblin sacrifice outlets. Trading Post allows you to turn stolen artifacts straight into card draw. You can even try it with Goblin Welder to cheat powerful artifacts of your own from your graveyard straight into play.
5. Skirk Prospector
With enough fuel, the prospector can ramp you into some really explosive turns, particularly with all the access red has to 'X' spells that can take full advantage of every single goblin you throw on the fire. This can create some really back-breaking Comet Storms or Banefires, or it can allow you to storm off with synergistic cards like Empty the Warrens.
At worst, he'll get you that one extra pip of mana you need to cast your three or four drop. At best, he threatens to provide the fuel to burn your opponents right out of the game before they even know what's hitting them.
4. Krenko, Tin Street Kingpin
No goblin in Magic history can stir up a rabble quite like Krenko. Unanswered, he will quickly fill the battlefield with his 1/1 goons, all of whom can of course attack en masse with him, or be used as sacrifice fodder for any of the many goblin sacrifice outlets on this list.
Krenko will always bring plenty of goblins with him, but you can really abuse him if you can find ways to boost his power. Equipment works extremely well here, particularly if it both boosts his power and makes it easier for him to attack. As a legendary creature, he works particularly well with The Blackblade Reforged, which even with only five lands in play will boost him to a 6/7 and have him create at least 7 goblin tokens when he swings in.
3. Krenko, Mob Boss
Like any good Krenko, the Mob Boss has the potential to pump out huge numbers of goblin tokens. What helps him to pip the Tin Street Kingpin and take the first podium slot on our list is his ability to create those goblins with less need for setup and without having to risk himself in combat.
All this Krenko demands is that you already have a decent number of goblins in play, which any dedicated goblin deck should be well set up to do. If you have a substantial board of goblins, even if it's just by casting a single Siege Gang Commander for four total, Krenko will be tapping to create five fresh goblins for no mana investment. Next turn, if your opponents don't disrupt you, it will be double that number. Exponential goblins are the best goblins!
Even if you have literally no board, Krenko can build up an army surprisingly quickly all on his own. He will always be a threat and
will demand an answer every game.
2. Kiki-Jiki, Mirror Breaker
The ability to create copies of any other creature in your deck, and to give it haste (all on the turn you cast Kiki-Jiki since he has haste himself) is hugely flexible and powerful. He works extremely well with cards like Siege-Gang Commander that come with multiple tokens attached and don't much care about being sacrificed at the end of the turn. In fact, as we've learned earlier in the list, any goblin deck worth its salt won't be letting the end-of-turn sacrifice clause kick in and will be sacrifcing those goblins for value instead.
While he's good in a goblin deck, Kiki-Jiki is by far at his strongest in a deck that can take advantage of his combo potential. He's absolutely notorious for a whole suite of 2-card combos that can flood the board with infinite hasty token copies thanks to his combination of both a haste and copy effect. He goes infinite with Restoration Angel, Felidar Guardian and Corridor Monitor to name just three. If you can find any of his combo partners, that makes this goblin shaman a game-ending threat that needs to be answered or disrupted immediately. Preferably before it can even hit the table.
1. Squee the Immortal
Squee is just such a great concept, we couldn't resist giving him the top spot. Granted immortality by the Phyrexians so that they could experiment on him, Squee now literally cannot die. And if we're honest, he's pretty smug about.
More than just being the most recognisable goblin in Magic, Squee can actually be a useful and very reliable engine in a lot of decks. In combination with any sacrifice outlet he is a great mana sink and value generator, and there are plenty of those in goblin decks. Rakdos decks can get perhaps the best use out of him, often being able to convert him directly into repeatable card advantage with cards like Village Rites or Culling Dais.
In short, if you need someone to die over and over again, Squee is your goblin. And he's very good at his job.
